Week 4 Project 4c

· Research the word "culture" on the Internet. In a brief paragraph, tell us what you find, tell us how this project topic fits into that definition. Cite your source: Learned behaviour which is socially transmitted, such as customs, belief, morals, technology, and art; everything in society which is socially, rather than biologically transmitted. The word has many connotations and a geographer might define it differently from, say, an archaeologist, who would distinguish between artefacts—material culture—and practices and beliefs—adaptive culture. Culture is the primary factor affecting the way in which individuals and societies respond to the environment. The cultural landscape is the man-made landscape as an expression of the response of a culture to its natural surroundings.

Examine any two of your classmates work for a review. Use project 4a and project 3a; so choose 1 student to review for project 3a, and one student for 4a.
· Martha Chavez: I learned that many of the pre Columbian civilizations such as the Aztec, Maya and Andes established characteristics and hallmarks which included urban settlements, agriculture and monumental architecture.Erik Pfeiffer: The native population was wiped out from the bloody conquest when the Spanish arrived. The population in Mexico's central valley was about 19 million before the Spanish conquerors arrived.

Week 4 Project 4b

· Contains a title: Mission San Juan Capistrano
· Contains a web link to the actual piece: http://www.missionsjc.com/
· Contains a brief paragraph of reference to components A and B, how you came across this piece, how it connects to your study of humanities: Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded on All Saints Day November 1, 1776 by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order. Named for a 15th century theologian and "warrior priest" who resided in the Abruzzo region of Italy, San Juan Capistrano has the distinction of being home to the oldest building in California still in use
1. Contains the following analytical elements:
a. Observation: What do you see in the artwork? What is the subject of the work? What is the work made of? What techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures) does the artist use? A view of Mission San Juan Capistrano in April of 2005. At left is the façade of the first adobe church with its added espadaña. Behind the campanario, or "bell wall" is the "Sacred Garden." The Mission has earned a reputation as the "Loveliest of the Franciscan Ruins.
b. Interpretation: In one sentence, what is the artwork about? The Mission of Saint John Capistrano of Sajavit
c. Judgement: What led you to choose this work of art? What do you think or feel about this work? Why do you feel this way? I thought that the church was really pretty; I think that this church is made with great passion. I feel this way because I can see the hard work the artist did to his art. In the front they also had like a beautiful garden and I thought that it looks really good.
d. Questioning: What would you like to know about this work? How much did it cost to build this chapel/church? What would you like to know about its history, its subject, or about the artist? How long did it take the artist to build this chapel/church?

Week 4 Project 4a

In a paragraph, tell us what "Conquest/Colonial' means.
· Conquest: A term used in feudal law to designate land acquisition by purchase; or any method other than descent or inheritance by which an individual obtains ownership of an estate. A term used in international law for the process whereby a sovereign nation is, by force of arms, made to submit to another nation; the defeated country thus becomes part of the empire of the conqueror.
· Colonial: Applied to styles of architecture derived from those of the motherland in a colony. American Colonial is a modification of the English Georgian or Queen Anne styles, of particular interest because very often pattern-book designs were re-interpreted for timber-framed structures, or otherwise altered, often by very subtle means. Although originally associated with the original thirteen British colonies in North America, the essentials of American Colonial architecture were often revived well into C20 all over the USA.
Tell us why you chose the topic, tell us about the sources you used: I chose this topic because I can relate to it, when I was younger my teachers bring our class to some of the missions in California. Ever since I was fascinated, the missions are very old, but beautiful. I found a lot of videos on YouTube and I found a website on Google.
Tell us 3 interesting facts about your topic in 3 separate paragraphs:
The Spanish missions in California more simply referred to as the California Missions comprise a series of religious outposts established by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order between 1769 and 1823 to spread the Catholic faith among the local Native Americans.
As early as the voyages of Christopher Columbus, the Kingdom of Spain sought to establish missions to convert Pagans to Roman Catholicism in Nueva España New Spain, consisting of the Caribbean, Mexico and most of what today is the Southwestern United States, in order to facilitate colonization of these lands awarded to Spain by the Catholic Church. The modern region "California" in this context refers to the Spanish territory formerly known as Alta California.
The Spanish mission system arose in part from the need to control Spain's ever-expanding holdings in the New World. Realizing that the colonies would require a literate population base that the mother country could not supply, the Spanish Crown (with the cooperation of the Church) established a network of missions with the goal of converting the natives to Christianity; the aim was to make converts and tax paying citizens of the indigenous peoples they conquered.
Use two sources for your work. Cite your sources used for this component and tell us why these sources are credible:
